Despite being an avid reader as a child and teenager, I had lost the habit of reading during the wilderness of my 20s and 30s. I rediscovered the world of books with my kids, starting with picture books and more recently chapter books as they get a bit bigger. The local libraries and mobile library in Northumberland have been an absolutely precious resource during the last decade and it's during our library visits that I started to consider writing my own children's book.
Felix and Everly's Mini Adventures start close to home, with 'The Wild Garden' in Northumberland, followed by 'The Big City' adventure in Newcastle. ‘The Old Woods’ is inspired by our local Kyloe Woods and set amidst Storm Arwen in autumn and the winter story is ‘The Best Christmas Ever’. The North East of England is our home and there is so much inspiration where we live. Book 5, Let Loose on Lindisfarne is set 2 years after The Wild Garden and is set on Holy Island and book 6, A Blizzard in Berwick, takes place in Berwick-Upon-Tweed amid a ‘Beast from the East’ style storm. I love the countryside, nature, walks and animals so my work reflects these interests and I hope the books showcase a little of the natural wonders of our local area.
I grew up between Britain and Brazil, making Northumberland my home in 2012 after a childhood scattered all over the place including regular visits to my Grandmother's country cottage near Craster. It was the one place I hated leaving and after travels to Portugal, Spain and France in my early 30s, we decided to settle down to start a family in rural/coastal Northumberland. Since I was raised in a bilingual household (Brazilian Portuguese and English) I have a love of languages and am currently looking into translating the books into Portuguese, Spanish and French, which I also speak a bit of.
I’ll be attending local markets with a Felix and Everly stall with the books and illustrations available as mounted prints.
